Finishes for packaging and labels: which one suits your product?

Matt, Soft-Touch, lamination or hot foil? The complete guide through every finishing option for packaging and labels. Plus concrete rules of thumb for what suits what.
Veredelungen für Verpackung und Etikett: Welche passt zu deinem Produkt?

Stand in front of a well-stocked shelf and close your eyes for a moment. When you open them again, your hands reach for certain products almost by themselves. Why? Not just because of the colour. Not just because of the price. It is the surface that decides too: matt or glossy, velvety or smooth, with or without a metallic highlight.

A finish is the silent salesperson of your brand. It helps decide whether your product reads as "might go in the basket" or "I have to take this". And because packaging and labels are made under one roof here, this guide shows you both: which finishes we offer, what sets them apart and how you find the right one for your product.

Let's get started.

What does a finish actually do?

A finish is not purely cosmetic. It works on three levels at once.

Look. Matt surfaces break the light and come across as calm, refined, high quality. Glossy surfaces make colours glow, strengthen contrast and pull the eye. Metallic effects such as hot foil set deliberate highlights for the eye to hold on to.

Feel. We humans reach for what feels good. Soft-Touch lays a velvety, almost textile layer over your label or your packaging. Matt lamination feels smooth and valuable. Gloss varnish sits over the print almost like a thin sheet of glass. Every one of these surfaces sends a different signal into your customer's hand.

Protection. Beyond look and feel, most finishes take on a second job: they protect the print. Against scratches, fingerprints, moisture, grease, abrasion in transit, handling on the shelf, friction in the box. A label without a protective layer visibly loses its freshness after weeks on sale. A label with the right finish still looks like day one after months.

Look, feel, protection: three effects in one layer. That is why finishes are standard for premium brands, and why they pay off for smaller brands that want a clear position too.

Finishes for packaging: matt and Soft-Touch

With us, packaging, stand-up pouches, flat-bottom pouches, flat pouches and roll stock, comes with two finishing options: matt finish and Soft-Touch. That sounds lean, but it covers the most important use cases.

Matt finish: the quiet classic

Matt finish is the standard among packaging finishes. It reduces reflections, gives the pouch a calm, modern appearance and keeps colours from overpowering. Ideal for anything meant to look minimalist or refined: specialty coffee, wellness products, organic snacks, nutrition brands with a clear design language.

Bonus: Matt surfaces can be combined with spot gloss. A high-gloss logo on a matt pouch, for instance, as a deliberate eye-catcher. An effect you see on almost every upmarket shelf.

Soft-Touch: the premium card

Soft-Touch takes the whole thing one step further. The surface feels velvety, almost like fine fabric. Anyone who has held the pouch once remembers it. That is exactly the effect brands put to work.

Soft-Touch is the move towards premium positioning: cosmetics pouches, boutique coffee roasters, nutrition brands in the premium segment. Beyond the feel there is a second practical effect: fingerprints are far less visible on Soft-Touch surfaces. For packaging that gets handled a lot on the shelf, a noticeable advantage.

Which formats?

Matt and Soft-Touch work on all our packaging formats, with one small nuance for the flat-bottom pouch: there, matt is standard and Soft-Touch is available on request. You will find all the details on format compatibility, prices and examples on our landing page for packaging finishes.

Finishes for labels: five routes, two worlds

With labels it gets more granular. The reason: the material decides what is possible. We separate two worlds: film labels and paper labels.

Film labels: four options

Soft-Touch works on labels just as it does on packaging: velvety surface, premium signal, fewer fingerprints. Ideal for cosmetics bottles, spirits and premium food labels.

Matt lamination is the matt protective layer applied as a film. It gives your label a smooth, calm surface and a solid all-round protection package: scratch-resistant, grease-, water- and sweat-resistant, plus an anti-fingerprint property. The classic for labels that have to take a beating.

Gloss lamination is the high-gloss counterpart. Colours glow, contrast gets sharper, the protection is just as robust as in matt. The bonus: this lamination is compatible with thermal transfer printing, so it can be overprinted later with batch numbers, best-before dates or serial numbers.

Gloss varnish is the thinner alternative to lamination. The varnish lays a high-gloss film over your label without noticeably increasing the material thickness. Visually almost like gloss lamination, but slimmer in build. Careful: gloss varnish is not compatible with thermal transfer printing. If you want to overprint later, choose the lamination.

Paper labels: hot foil as the highlight

We deliberately supply paper labels without a protective layer. The charm of a paper label lies precisely in the natural feel of the material: slightly rough, matt, tangible. A protective layer would neutralise that effect.

In return, we offer a different finish on paper: hot foil stamping. It is not an all-over coating but a spot metallic stamping. It lets you lift individual design elements. Your logo or your brand name, creating maximum contrast: glossy metallic elements on a matt paper ground.

Standard colours: gold, silver, bronze. For the premium look that has worked on wine, beer and spirits labels for decades and is finding its way into cosmetics and fine food more and more often.

You will soon find all the details and examples of label finishes on our landing page for label finishes.

Conclusion: look, feel, protection – your triad

Finishes are the last step before the production run and the first impression with the customer. Whether you go for matt, Soft-Touch, lamination, gloss varnish or hot foil comes down to three questions: which look suits the brand, which feel suits the product, and what protection does the label or the packaging need day to day?

The fastest route to the right decision: feel it once. Order our free sample pack with finished examples – Soft-Touch, matt, lamination and hot foil for a direct comparison in your hand. And if you are still unsure after that: Sebastian has helped hundreds of brands with exactly this decision.

We look forward to your project!
