Mandatory information on honey labels – what must be included?

In addition to an appealing design, honey labels must also meet certain legal requirements. To help you keep track of everything, we have summarised the most important mandatory information for you:

product name

Each jar of honey must clearly indicate the type of honey it contains – for example, 'blossom honey', 'forest honey' or another unambiguous designation.

best before date

The best-before date must be included on your honey label. It indicates the date until which the honey is at least edible when stored correctly.

filling quantity

The filling quantity must be stated in grams or millilitres so that consumers know exactly how much honey is contained in the jar.

Name and address of the beekeeper

To enable customers to trace the origin of their honey, it is mandatory to include the full name and address of the manufacturer or beekeeper on the label.

country of origin

The origin of the honey must also be stated – for example, "German honey" or "mixture from EU and non-EU countries". This ensures transparency for consumers.

Special quality features

If your honey has special characteristics, such as "organic", "cold-spun" or "unfiltered", these details may also be included on the label – provided, of course, that they are accurate and verifiable.

Lot number

For traceability purposes, every batch of honey must bear a batch number. This batch number makes it easier to identify the exact product in the event of queries or complaints.

Ensure that all information is clearly legible, permanently printed and smudge-proof. Then you will be on the safe side legally – and your glass will also look great on the shelf.

What materials are suitable for honey labels?
